QUILT magazine publishes six issues of QUILT plus a number of special interest quilting magazines each
year. Each magazine needs a cover. Our covers come from quilters just like you. Here are some of the
things we look for when selecting a cover quilt.
Color, color, color! Brighter colors photograph best, so bright colored quilts are at the
top of our list. Quilts should have mostly color, including the background.
Classic patterns. Our readers are primarily attracted to quilts that have long been a part
of the quilting tradition. We also prefer quilts that a novice quilter can sew, but will still catch
the eye and imagination of the more experienced quilter.
Imaginative quilt design. We love to see variations of classic patterns.
Innovative settings and borders. These can be simple variations on the basics so long as
they add interest to the finished quilt. Patchwork or appliqué borders are especially important.
Overall visual impact. Do the colors, the block pattern, the variations on tradition and
settings and borders work together to make a clear and compelling visual impact? Can we easily
identify the block pattern? Are the colors exciting eye candy? Do the setting and border bring
the quilt together or do they compete with the other features of the quilt?
No previously published patterns. You may use any block pattern or setting or border idea
that have appeared in previous issues of QUILT or any of our special issues. You may use any block
design in the public domain so long as you create the setting yourself. You may NOT use any quilt
that is made with a pattern from a competing magazine, commercial pattern or quilt book. Copyright
laws prohibit us from using quilts made from these other sources. You must give us the information
about the source of your pattern when you submit your photo or jpg. Thank you for helping us respect
the creativity of others.
